湖南省儿童医院于1987年6月1日正式建成对外开放，是一所集医疗、教学、科研、预防保健于一体的三级甲等儿童专科医院。

医院现有编制床位1800张，在职职工2019人，临床专业科室31个，病区40个，医技科室10个。拥有国家临床重点专科4个，省重点实验室2个，省临床重点专科7个，省级临床诊疗中心14个，省内首家通过ISO9001/14001国际质量环境体系认证，两次荣获中国宋庆龄儿科医学奖，牵头完成国家“十二五”科技支撑计划项目，正创建国家儿童区域医疗中心。

医院是国内首家获批肝肾移植双资质的儿童专科医院，是湖南省儿童罕见病联盟主席单位、湖南省儿科质量控制中心和湖南省小儿外科质量控制中心挂靠单位。开展全球首例经皮股静脉途径可降解VSD封堵器人体植入术，儿童肝肾移植、体外膜肺氧合、脑干及大脑中线深部脑肿瘤的多模态治疗、儿童难治性癫痫的外科手术治疗、儿童脑血管并综合治疗、先天性胫骨假关节诊治等技术达国内领先水平，造血干细胞移植、介入治疗、外科腔镜技术、内窥镜技术、ICG荧光染色技术等核心技术居国内领先地位。

成立湖南省儿科医学研究所，建设儿童临床研究（转化）中心，设有博士后科研工作站和儿科学院，是暨南大学研究生培养基地。作为中国唯一的儿科医疗援外培训医疗机构，首批“一带一路”妇幼卫生培训示范基地，牵头成立发展中国家儿童健康联盟，与美国纽约州立基础研究院、洛杉矶儿童医院分别建立“儿童孤独症诊疗研究中心”和“儿童肿瘤中心”，获批省直医疗机构唯一院士工作站（陈肇隆院士专家工作站），是中国-中东欧医院合作联盟单位、中国-法国医院合作联盟单位、国际尿石症联盟儿童尿石病防治中心。

Opening on June 1, 1987, Hunan Children’s Hospital is a Grade III Class A children’s hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, preventive care, and healthcare.

Furnished with 1,800 beds and staffed with 2019 employees,  the Hospital has 31 clinical departments, 40 wards, and 10 medical laboratories. It has four national-level key clinical specialties, two provincial-level key laboratories, seven provincial-level key clinical specialties, and 14 provincial-level clinical diagnosis and treatment centers. It was the first hospital in Hunan Province to be certified by the ISO9001/14001 international quality environment system. The Hospital has won the Song Qingling Pediatrics Award twice, completed “the 12th Five-Year Plan” National Key Technology R&D Program, and is striving to build a national children’s regional medical center.

Hunan Children’s Hospital is the first children’s hospital to obtain qualifications for liver and kidney transplantation in China. It is the president unit of the Hunan Province Rare Pediatric Diseases Alliance, Pediatric Quality Control Center of Hunan Province, and affiliated institution of the Pediatric Surgery Quality Control Center of Hunan Province. The Hospital has conducted the world’s first degradable VSD occluder implantation via cutaneous femoral veins,  and led the domestic practices such as children’s liver and kidney transplants, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), multimodal treatment of brain tumors in the deep brainstem and brain midline, surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy in children, comprehensive treatment of cerebrovascular disease in children, and diagnosis and treatment of congenital pseudoarthrosis of tibia (CPT). The Hospital takes a leading role in China in developing core technologies including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), interventional therapy, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS).

The Hospital has established the Hunan Pediatric Research Institute and Children’s Clinical Research (Translation) Center, and set up a post-doctoral research center and pediatrics academy. It is the postgraduate training base for Jinan University. As the pediatric China-aid training medical institution and one of the first Belt and Road Maternal and Child Health Training Hubs, it took the lead to establish the Children’s Health Alliance for Developing Countries. It has built the Child Autism Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center, and Children’s Tumor Center in collaboration with Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities of New York State and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles respectively. The Hospital has set up the one and only academician workstation in Hunan’s medical institutions (Workstation of Academician Chen Zhaolong). It is the member of China-CEEC Hospital Cooperation Alliance, China-France Hospital Cooperation Alliance(CF-HCA), and the Children’s Urolithiasis Prevention and Treatment Center of the International Alliance of Urolithiasis (IAU).
